Abstract

Zymomonas mobilis is a Gram-negative, mobile, facultatively anaerobic, and nonpathogenic bacterium that, when fermented from sucrose can produce metabolites with biologically active activities. The present study aims to identify the therapeutic applicability of Z. mobilis on predisposing factors
of dyslipidemia and colorectal cancer through a literature review. Fructose oligomers, levan, and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are bioactive compounds resulting from sucrose fermentation by Z. mobilis and have been raising interest in their potential therapeutic applications. Levan has immunomodulatory and antitumor actions on the liver and intestinal cells. FOS acts on lipid metabolism, regulating serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, thus suppressing hepatic steatosis. This probiotic can also trigger a protective eff ect in the colon by inhibiting pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp. Due to the ability to control lipid metabolism dysregulation and maintain intestinal microbiota homeostasis, Z. mobilis can be an alternative to conventional drugs for patients presenting chronic diseases, such as dyslipidemia and colorectal neoplasms.
